Legendary player scores on comeback, India secures huge win over Maldives (3-0)

Shillong: India defeated Maldives 3-0 in the match that saw Sunil Chhetri return from retirement. Rahul Bheke (34th minute), Liston Collazo (66th) and Sunil Chhetri (76th) scored for India in the international friendly football match. Chhetri scored his 95th goal in the Indian jersey in Shillong. India’s first goal came from a corner kick taken by Brandon Fernandes in the 34th minute. Rahul Bheke headed the ball into the net from inside the box. In the 66th minute, Liston Collazo headed the ball past the Maldives defenders in a corner taken by Navoram Mahesh Singh. With this, the score became 2-0. The goal awaited by Indian fans came in the 76th minute. Chhetri headed the ball in off a Liston Collazo assist. This was India’s first win since Manolo Marquez took over as India coach. It was 489 days since India won an international match. India suffered a setback as Brandon Fernandes was injured during the match and returned. Brandon Fernandes is unlikely to play in the AFC Asian Cup match against Bangladesh.
