London: Newcastle United brought a royal end to their seven-decade wait for a domestic trophy at Wembley Stadium. Newcastle won the English League Cup final by defeating Liverpool, who have been in excellent form this season. Newcastle United won 2-1 in a thrilling final. After a goalless first half, all three goals in the match were scored in the second half. Dan Byrne (45th minute) and Alexander Isak (52nd minute) scored for Newcastle. In the final moments of the match, substitute Federico Chiesa (90+4) scored Liverpool’s consolation goal in injury time. Liverpool, who won the first leg of the Champions Trophy but lost the second leg and then lost to PSG in a penalty shootout and were eliminated in the pre-quarters, suffered a heavy defeat. It is noteworthy that Newcastle won the domestic tournament title after a seven-decade wait since winning the FA Cup in 1955. Liverpool entered the final by defeating Tottenham Hotspur. In the second leg of the semi-final, which turned out to be one-sided, Liverpool defeated Tottenham by four goals to none. Liverpool’s progress was also avenged by the 1–0 defeat in the first leg at Tottenham’s stadium.
